I Put All My Quilt UFOs in a Jar… Then I Drew THIS One

Do you have a pile of unfinished quilt projects that you keep promising yourself you’ll get back to… someday?

So do I.

Instead of staring at my UFOs and trying to decide which one deserves my attention next, I decided to take the decision completely out of my hands.

I wrote down every unfinished quilt project I could find, put them all into a jar, and drew ONE.

The rule? Whatever came out of the UFO Jar had to be pulled out, looked at honestly, and either finished, reworked, or officially reconsidered.

And naturally… I didn’t draw an easy one.

I drew a set of antique embroidered quilt blocks covered with names — blocks I’ve had for years and knew almost nothing about.

What started as a simple “let’s deal with our UFOs” experiment suddenly became something much more interesting.

In this video, I’m taking you through my UFO Jar idea, showing you some of the unfinished projects hiding in my sewing room, and pulling out the project that the jar chose for me.

And let’s just say… these antique blocks have a story.

We’re not diving into that story quite yet — but we will. 😉

Do you ever feel guilty about quilting? Maybe it’s the pile of UFOs staring at you from the corner of your sewing room. The fabric you bought years ago and still haven’t used. The project you started but no longer love. Or that little voice telling you that you should prewash your fabric, match every point perfectly, finish every quilt you start, and somehow own every new quilting gadget that comes along.

Can we just…stop?

In this video, I’m having a little sewing-room chat about quilting guilt and all the unnecessary rules and obligations we quilters sometimes create for ourselves.

We’re talking about unfinished quilt projects (UFOs), fabric stashes, scraps, imperfect points, pre-washing fabric, favorite quilting tools, changing quilt patterns—and even giving ourselves permission to decide that a project simply isn’t worth finishing.

I absolutely believe in learning good quilting techniques and improving our skills. But there’s a big difference between learning how to make better quilts and believing we have to quilt a certain way to be a “good quilter.”

Your fabric stash should feel like possibilities—not debt.
Quilting is supposed to be creative. It should be a place where we can experiment, change our minds, make mistakes, try something new, and sometimes say, “You know what? I don't want to finish this.”
So pull up a chair in the sewing room. I think we need to talk about this one.

Flower Farm Sampler Quilt-Along | Month 6: Dahlia & Gentian Blocks (Blocks 5 & 6| Sampler Quilt BOM

What can you make with two jelly rolls? In this episode of Conversations with Conrad, I fully transformed a brainstorming session for a simple jelly roll quilt idea into a scrappy-but-organized Courthouse Steps throw quilt — and then I made a weekend project plan to go with it.

This quilt uses two jelly rolls, large beginner-friendly Courthouse Steps blocks, two skinny borders, and a scrappy piano key border made from leftover strips. It is designed to feel organized without being fussy — no tiny pieces, no Y-seams, and no complicated layout.

This video is part quilting project, part AI experiment, and part “let’s see if this actually helps real quilters get sewing.” It is also a full weekend project Quilt-Along for you to follow the quilt idea to a finished project.
