Why would a professional quilt pattern designer make a quilt she’ll NEVER turn into a pattern?

Sometimes the most meaningful quilts aren’t the ones we make from patterns. They’re the quilts that tell a story.

In today’s video, I’m sharing a very special quilt I designed and made for my son Noah when he earned his Eagle Scout rank.

This isn’t your typical Eagle Scout quilt! Every traditional quilt block was carefully selected to represent something about Noah’s life, his family, his accomplishments, and his journey through Scouting.

From historical quilt blocks and patriotic designs to the Scout Oath quilted in my own handwriting, this quilt is filled with personal meaning.

I’ll share the stories behind the blocks, the symbolism hidden throughout the design, and why this particular quilt will never become a published pattern.

We’ll also talk about something I believe is important for every quilter: Sometimes the best quilts aren’t about following instructions. They’re about creating something that could only belong to one person.

Whether you’re making a memory quilt, a graduation quilt, a family heirloom, or a special gift for someone you love, I hope this story inspires you to think about the meaning you can stitch into your own quilts.

Flower Farm Quilt Along MONTH 10 | Lily & Star Flower Quilt Blocks

Have you ever had someone casually ask, “Could you make me a quilt?” If you’re a quilter, you already know that simple question comes with a LOT more than most people realize.

In this video, we’re talking about what really happens when someone asks you to make them a quilt—from choosing a design and finding the perfect fabric to cutting, piecing, quilting, binding, and all those little decisions nobody sees along the way.

Because a handmade quilt isn’t just fabric and thread. It’s hours of designing, problem-solving, sewing, pressing, ripping out the occasional seam (we’ve all been there), quilting, binding—and probably thinking about that quilt when you’re supposed to be doing something else. And then there’s the big question: Do you have to say yes?

We’ll talk about the real cost of handmade quilts, why your quilting time has value, why fabric from your stash is definitely NOT free, and why sometimes making a quilt for someone you love is absolutely worth every minute.

Quilters, I want to hear your stories:What’s the wildest, funniest, or most unrealistic quilt request someone has ever made of you? Tell me in the comments!I

When Someone Asks You to Make Them a Quilt… They Have NO Idea

What started as a box of unfinished antique embroidered quilt blocks has turned into a genuine historical mystery.

The blocks are signed with women’s names — but who were they? Where did they live? How did they know one another? And why did all of their names end up together in the same quilt?

After drawing these blocks from my UFO Jar, I started doing a little genealogy and local-history research. A little research became a LOT of research…and eventually my sewing room needed a full-blown murder board.

In this episode, I’m sharing what I’ve uncovered so far: the women we’ve identified, the family and community connections beginning to emerge, the clues that sent us in completely different directions, and the questions we still haven’t answered.

I’m also sharing what I’ve learned from the quilt blocks themselves and how I’m thinking about finishing this quilt without erasing the history already stitched into it.

This isn’t just an unfinished quilt anymore. It’s a group of real women who lived nearly a century ago — and we’re trying to piece their story back together one name at a time.

If you love antique quilts, quilt history, genealogy, family-history research, historical mysteries, vintage embroidery, or simply a really good rabbit hole, come investigate with me.

There are still names we haven’t solved — and the investigation isn’t over.

I Found Names on Antique Quilt Blocks… So I Started Investigating | UFO Jar Project | Genealogy

Do you have a pile of unfinished quilt projects that you keep promising yourself you’ll get back to… someday?

So do I.

Instead of staring at my UFOs and trying to decide which one deserves my attention next, I decided to take the decision completely out of my hands.

I wrote down every unfinished quilt project I could find, put them all into a jar, and drew ONE.

The rule? Whatever came out of the UFO Jar had to be pulled out, looked at honestly, and either finished, reworked, or officially reconsidered.

And naturally… I didn’t draw an easy one.

I drew a set of antique embroidered quilt blocks covered with names — blocks I’ve had for years and knew almost nothing about.

What started as a simple “let’s deal with our UFOs” experiment suddenly became something much more interesting.

In this video, I’m taking you through my UFO Jar idea, showing you some of the unfinished projects hiding in my sewing room, and pulling out the project that the jar chose for me.

And let’s just say… these antique blocks have a story.

We’re not diving into that story quite yet — but we will. 😉

If your sewing room is full of unfinished quilts, forgotten projects, abandoned ideas, and things you’re not even sure you WANT to finish anymore, come join me. Maybe we can take a little of the guilt out of our UFO piles and start looking at them differently.

YOUR TURN:
If you put all of your UFOs into a jar today, which project would you be secretly hoping NOT to draw?

And would you actually agree to work on whatever came out? 😂

Subscribe and follow along — because the antique name blocks that came out of this jar sent me down a rabbit hole I never expected.

I Put All My Quilt UFOs in a Jar… Then I Drew THIS One

Do you ever feel guilty about quilting? Maybe it’s the pile of UFOs staring at you from the corner of your sewing room. The fabric you bought years ago and still haven’t used. The project you started but no longer love. Or that little voice telling you that you should prewash your fabric, match every point perfectly, finish every quilt you start, and somehow own every new quilting gadget that comes along.

Can we just…stop?

In this video, I’m having a little sewing-room chat about quilting guilt and all the unnecessary rules and obligations we quilters sometimes create for ourselves.

We’re talking about unfinished quilt projects (UFOs), fabric stashes, scraps, imperfect points, pre-washing fabric, favorite quilting tools, changing quilt patterns—and even giving ourselves permission to decide that a project simply isn’t worth finishing.

I absolutely believe in learning good quilting techniques and improving our skills. But there’s a big difference between learning how to make better quilts and believing we have to quilt a certain way to be a “good quilter.”

Your fabric stash should feel like possibilities—not debt.
Quilting is supposed to be creative. It should be a place where we can experiment, change our minds, make mistakes, try something new, and sometimes say, “You know what? I don't want to finish this.”
So pull up a chair in the sewing room. I think we need to talk about this one.

YOUR TURN: What is sitting in your sewing room making you feel guilty? An unfinished quilt? Fabric you haven't touched in ten years? A project you've secretly wanted to abandon? Tell me in the comments—I have a feeling we're going to discover we're definitely not alone.
